I’m sure you’ve seen those gorgeous macrame wall hangings on all of your fave ‘grammer accounts — and then you go to buy one, and you’re like, “hi, NOPE.”
Thank goodness for Jessica Needham, entrepreneur and girl boss of homeMADE Ventura! She is totally rocking this DIY craft that we now love, and taking the 805 by storm with her own macrame workshops! She invited us to stop by and give it a try this month… and now, we’re hooked. Our workshop was in the beautiful barn at Camarillo Ranch, and provided the prime environment for a beautiful summer Sunday.
Taking place at venues across the 805 [like MadeWest Brewing Co., Cask Alehouse, RELM Beer + Wine Bistro, and Bellissimo Boutique], Jessica teaches you the art of macrame in a low-stress, fun environment — okay, and she provides wine or beer and snacks, which pretty much makes anything better. But for reals, it’s such a fun outing. And surprisingly, due to Jessica’s welcoming & helpful attitude, it’s not intimidating at all! For less than half of the typical price of a wall hanging, she will teach you how to make your own art piece and provide all of the set-up and supplies!
This workshop was a gift for my mom on Mother’s Day [hint hint for the perf gift idea!] and so naturally Hayley and Tanisha had their mama come along, too! Our moms are products of the 1960’s, so they were obviously schooling us in the macrame department. We were shocked at how relaxing and therapeutic this workshop was — those paint + wine nights never really gave us that feeling, so this was a pleasant surprise!
Jessica taught us several different knots, and walked us through each step. She and her assistant walked around the room, giving guidance and assistance whenever we needed it. There was room for a little bit of creativity, and she showed us how to make our hangings individualized to our liking.
About halfway through the workshop, we got to pick a plant in a beautiful copper planter from Copper Mug Co., another of our favorite 805 vendors [seriously, we want to buy everything in her online store]. We weaved it into our macrame hanging, and walked away with a beautiful piece of home decor that we couldn’t wait to hang up!
